Liquor Stories – New Arrivals At Local Liquor Stores

Hi guys,
I blew it and messed up the list for Mountain Spirits. The original email I sent was last month's listing. Please see this month's listing below. Also note - they are having a beer tasting tonight!

Liquor Stories:

Our tribute to local liquor stores that like beer - and not just crap beer, I mean Real Beer! Not all of them are cool enough to contribute to our kick a$$ club, so be sure to treat the ones that do with some extra business. You might even get a discount!

From Star Liquors in Durango:

Hello Home Brewers and Beer Lovers!

August is flying by and I am afraid summer is going with it. Harvesting is happening and the fair is already over. I hope some of you were the lucky ribbon winners with the home brew entries. I love seeing homebrew in the fair, we have come so far! I have some great new beers here at Star, and we are featuring Boulevard Brewing from Kansas City Missouri as our Beer of the Month. They really have some outstanding brews. With that I will jump into some beer reviews.

Hailing from California we have another great Limited Release from our friend at Firestone Walker. The Double Double Barrel Aged Imperial Special Bitter, a little redundant but boy the beer really makes up for an odd name. Vanilla, oak and toffee really show from the barrel and a bittersweet dried fruit note hangs from the palate. Not to sweet and very complex, I would recommend drinking this beer a little warmer so you can really pick out all the nuances. Like all of Firestones Limited Series a 22oz bomber is $13.49. I was very impressed with this beer.

Full Sail from Oregon continues to impress with the Brewers Reserve Series, the newest offering is a Berliner Weiss that I though captured the style nicely. Maybe a little more tame then an authentic Berliner Weiss but still tart and refreshing. I always recommend this style of beer for people just getting into sours. A 22oz bottle for $3.99 is a great price and defiantly worth it to try an American interpretation of this style.

Jolly Pumpkin from Michigan is still producing some of the best small craft beer in the country. Luciernaga aka The Firefly is as usual a funky beer, floral and malt nose with a spicy flavor that reflects the barrel. Soft carbonation and a lightly bitter finish forms one of Jolly Pumpkins better releases. A .750 ml is $15.49 and worth every penny.

A new collaboration from Russian River and Sierra Nevada called Brux is having a very hard time staying on the shelf. This is coined a “Domesticated Wild Ale” and is a true testament to an evolving beer. It was created to change with time more then most Bret beers. Tart, green grass, lemon and spice are only the beginning of a beer that will develop it’s bret characteristic over the months and years. Right now the funk is subdued but give this beer some time and I think it will be a real treasure. I was astounded that a .750 ml is only $8.99, which meant to me, try one now, and again in a year and then again a few years after that. Get them while you still can!

Brew Dog and Three Floyd have done a collaboration with a great name. “Bitch Please” is a .330ml bottle for $12.99 and while very proud of this beer it is justified. Many different malts including Laphroig whisky malt, and then aged in a single malt scotch barrel. This beer is a scotch lovers dream. Smokey, peaty and malty, are some of the flavors in this complex brew. I would recommend tasting this beer a little warmer in a snifter.

With that I will bid you all a great rest of your month and have fun getting those fall beers bubbling.

Cheers,

Oliver
