Hop Pickin' Party - Need Help NOW!

Hi guys,
Tony with Pagosa Brewing Co is brewing a fresh hop today and he needs some help picking some hops! They are literally pulling the hops off the vines and throwing them into the brew as we speak - er, type / read. If you are available and can help, they could use some extra hands getting the hops picked, and they need your help NOW! If you get this and you are available, just head down to the brewery. They will be harvesting for the next couple hours. If you dont get this right away, call the brewery at 731-BREW to see if they are still harvesting.

Cheers ~

Ska Brewing: Mole Stout

Ska Brewing Kicks Off Seasonal Stout Program With Autumnal Mole Stout

DURANGO, COLO., (Aug. 29, 2012) — Ska Brewing’s Seasonal Stout program—featuring a different canned stout released near the equinox or solstice of each of the four seasons—kicks off September 22nd with the series’ first release: Autumnal Mole Stout.

The Autumnal Mole Stout is an ale brewed with cocoa nibs, spices and three varieties of chile peppers: Mulato, Ancho and Hatch green chiles, (also known as Anaheim Peppers.)

An important source of inspiration for the Autumnal Mole Stout is Ska Brewing’s location in the high desert of Southern Colorado, not far from the New Mexico border. “Mexican, New Mexican, Southwestern—that’s just the way we eat here,” said Ska President and co-founder Dave Thibodeau. “Around this time of year, chile roasters show up at the farmers market and grocery store parking lots and you can smell fresh-roasted chiles all over town. Given our Steel Toe (Milk) Stout’s 2011 GABF Gold and 2012 World Beer Cup Gold medals, we thought this new program should showcase our stouts. The balance between the milk stout sweetness and the chile spice and flavor seemed like a perfect combination for autumn.”

The packaging for the Autumnal Mole Stout (picture below) features a black, 12-oz. can, with Ska’s comic book-inspired take on the Mayan snake-god Kukulkan. The beer’s release will be celebrated on the Equinox at Ska Brewing World HQ in Durango, but according to Thibodeau “all the points on the celestial sphere should align, creating a national celebration on that most scientifically important day. At least in our nine markets.”

Ska will release three more new, canned seasonal stouts this year, with releases coming in December of this year, then in March and June of 2013, when—assuming the 12/21/12 calamity howlers are wrong— the cycle will begin again.

About Ska Brewing

Based in Durango, Colorado, Ska Brewing was founded in 1995 and now produces over a dozen award-winning beers including the Pinstripe Red Ale, True Blonde Ale and Steel Toe Stout. Four Ska beers are now widely available in cans: ESB Special Ale, True Blonde, Modus Hoperandi IPA and the winter seasonal Euphoria Pale Ale. Re: HOPS Brewsletter - August 2012

"I might be the ugly bloke in the mirror, but I don’t really give a damn any more."

Every so often we look into the mirror and acceptance comes and then all our makeup readjusts...the trick is to accept w/out reducing our horizons.  A good IPA always helps.

Give it hell...never go meekly into the night....

HOPS Brewsletter - August 2012

HOPS – Homebrewers Of Pagosa Springs

Hiya HOPS Heads,

Ever get that feeling like you’re getting old? Some of you may be more used to this than others, but frankly I don’t plan to get used to such things. I don’t have time to get old. (Suddenly I feel like I just quoted some old guy that used to be young.) Take this morning, for example. I got up, looked in the mirror and thought: “Dude, you’re getting uglier.” Granted, some mornings I may be a little worse off than others (depending on what IPA Silver Dollar had on sale the previous evening, for example) but this morning was something different. Ugly was the issue, but it was firmly affixed to the age thing. There were a few extra lines in the face. My uni-brau was accentuated. I had a couple more chins than usual. The mirror sneered back at me. Granted, I’m working on perfecting the perma-eye-bags, and doing well. That part I was particularly proud of. A receding hair line / fried-follicle or two helps add to the look. But there was something else. Something creepy. There was an older looking dude than before staring back at me than normal. And he was ugly. And older than yesterday. I started to get depressed, but then I thought about one of my favorite quotes: “I pity the man who does not drink – for when he wakes up in the morning, that is the best he will feel all day.” – Some Guy. Wow, that there is a depressing thought… If this was the best I was going to feel all day, I needed to change something. Sure, I felt like crapola schlamola this morning but the day would get better. Of course it will get better – there is a light at the end of this decrepit tunnel. Not a light beer, necessarily, but a light none the less. A hop-flavored carrot dangling at the end of a stick that fish hooks me in the nose - feet dragging behind - pulling me forward like a cartoon character hovering over the parched earth. Frosty mug of beer before me, an oasis of chillaxin’ and frothy goodness. Beer. Eureka – the fountain of youth! Here I am now, drinking a fresh, homebrewed IPA (which happens to be the Style of the Month for the homebrew club!) and the day is suddenly much better! I might be the ugly bloke in the mirror, but I don’t really give a damn any more. In fact, I feel pretty good, so I must look pretty good too! You know, some people think alcohol causes people to make irrational decisions. Funny thing – I am perfectly capable of making irrational decisions on my own, thank you. In fact, some may think it was irrational to suck on this IPA and go dancing (on a table top). But you know what? It feels good. And I look pretty friggin’ good doin’ it, too. Care to join me?

Until next time, cheers and happy fermenting ~

Quote of the Day:  Remember! Drinking may cause memory loss. Or worse, memory loss!

 - I can’t remember who said that…

Tech Tip of the Day: Ok, a simple one. If you are cleaning bottles or carboys, have you learned about swirling the bottle? A lot of people know about this, but if you are new to the ‘bottling line’ then this is a huge help. When you turn your bottles or carboys upside-down, give them a good swirl to get the liquid out. Basically you are creating a little swirley (like in the bathtub drain) that sucks the liquid out super fast. It can save time, and hey – we’re getting older by the minute, so who couldn’t use a little extra time?

My name is Ben Caya and I'm the owner of Spike Brewing LLC. I wanted to drop a quick note to your home brew club. If you're not aware, we make stainless steel home brew kettles. I just graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Over the past year my 'part time' business throughout school has turned into a full time job. We are a vendor on HomeBrewTalk.com and have been very well received thus far but I'd like to expand our reach to local home brewing clubs. I would really appreciate it if you could pass along information on Spike Brewing to your members. All our kettles can be seen and purchased on my website which is www.spikebrewing.com. From Star Liquors in Durango:

Hello Home Brewers and Beer Lovers!

August is flying by and I am afraid summer is going with it. Harvesting is happening and the fair is already over. I hope some of you were the lucky ribbon winners with the home brew entries. I love seeing homebrew in the fair, we have come so far! I have some great new beers here at Star, and we are featuring Boulevard Brewing from Kansas City Missouri as our Beer of the Month. They really have some outstanding brews. With that I will jump into some beer reviews.

Hailing from California we have another great Limited Release from our friend at Firestone Walker. The Double Double Barrel Aged Imperial Special Bitter, a little redundant but boy the beer really makes up for an odd name. Vanilla, oak and toffee really show from the barrel and a bittersweet dried fruit note hangs from the palate. Not to sweet and very complex, I would recommend drinking this beer a little warmer so you can really pick out all the nuances. Like all of Firestones Limited Series a 22oz bomber is $13.49. I was very impressed with this beer.

Full Sail from Oregon continues to impress with the Brewers Reserve Series, the newest offering is a Berliner Weiss that I though captured the style nicely. Maybe a little more tame then an authentic Berliner Weiss but still tart and refreshing. I always recommend this style of beer for people just getting into sours. A 22oz bottle for $3.99 is a great price and defiantly worth it to try an American interpretation of this style.

Jolly Pumpkin from Michigan is still producing some of the best small craft beer in the country. Luciernaga aka The Firefly is as usual a funky beer, floral and malt nose with a spicy flavor that reflects the barrel. Soft carbonation and a lightly bitter finish forms one of Jolly Pumpkins better releases. A .750 ml is $15.49 and worth every penny.

A new collaboration from Russian River and Sierra Nevada called Brux is having a very hard time staying on the shelf. This is coined a “Domesticated Wild Ale” and is a true testament to an evolving beer. It was created to change with time more then most Bret beers. Tart, green grass, lemon and spice are only the beginning of a beer that will develop it’s bret characteristic over the months and years. Right now the funk is subdued but give this beer some time and I think it will be a real treasure. I was astounded that a .750 ml is only $8.99, which meant to me, try one now, and again in a year and then again a few years after that. Get them while you still can!

Brew Dog and Three Floyd have done a collaboration with a great name. “Bitch Please” is a .330ml bottle for $12.99 and while very proud of this beer it is justified. Many different malts including Laphroig whisky malt, and then aged in a single malt scotch barrel. This beer is a scotch lovers dream. Smokey, peaty and malty, are some of the flavors in this complex brew. I would recommend tasting this beer a little warmer in a snifter.

With that I will bid you all a great rest of your month and have fun getting those fall beers bubbling.

Cheers,

Oliver

Black Butte XXIV

Hey everybody, we just got in a special case of Deschutes Black Butte XXIV thier 24th Birthday Reserve.  "XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter's debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it's a jazz riff, guided by the Brewer's muse and the lure of exotic ingredients.  Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission Figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet.  But, as it should be, you'll be the judge of that."

We have 10 bottles left and wanted to let everyone here have a chance at it before I put it on the shelf.  The price will be $11.51 after the the HOPS 10% off you recieve on all bombers.  So if you would like a bottle email me and let me know and I will hold one for you.
